Why plan outfits at all
Deciding what to wear is a small decision made at your most rushed moment. Making it once, calmly, takes the pressure off each morning and makes it easier to wear what you actually own.
Step 1: Look at the week ahead
List what is on: meetings, lunches, dinners, workouts, anything with a dress code. Note the time and the place, because an outdoor dinner and an indoor one call for different clothes.
Step 2: Check the weather
Glance at the forecast for each day. Temperature, rain and wind change what works, and it is much easier to account for them in advance than to change at the door.
Step 3: Choose one outfit per event
Start with the most important event of the week and build outward. Avoid repeating the same combination, but do repeat pieces. Check that the shoes work with the walking you will do.
Step 4: Make it easy to follow
- Attach each outfit to the event, or write it next to the date.
- Set out the pieces the night before.
- Keep one flexible backup outfit for days that change.
Step 5: Note what you wore
Keeping track of what you have worn shows you which outfits you love and which pieces you keep skipping, and it stops you repeating the same look at the same event.
