Why the photo matters
A digital wardrobe is only as useful as its photos. A clear picture is easier to recognise and sort, and it makes outfits easier to read at a glance. You do not need a camera or a studio: a phone and a bit of daylight are enough.
Step 1: Choose a plain background
A bed sheet, a clean floor or a plain wall works. Avoid busy patterns and clutter, which make a piece harder to see and to recognise.
Step 2: Use even, soft light
Daylight from a window is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun and strong shadows, and avoid a yellow room light that changes the colour of the fabric.
Step 3: Lay it flat or hang it
Lay the piece flat on the background, or hang it on a hanger against a plain wall. Smooth out wrinkles first so the shape and details are clear.
Step 4: Fit the whole piece in the frame
Keep the entire item in the photo, with a little space around it, so nothing is cut off. Shoot straight on rather than at an angle.
Step 5: One piece per photo
Photograph each item separately. A photo of a single piece is sorted more accurately than a photo of a pile.
Step 6: Keep it consistent
Use the same background, light and distance for every photo. A consistent set of pictures looks tidy and makes outfits easier to compare.
File types and adding many at once
WearDrobe accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC images, taken with your camera or picked from your library, and you can add several at once. When you add a photo, WearDrobe classifies the piece for you, and you can correct the category, colour, brand or season at any time.
